Getting Ready To Start With
Space Coast Therapy Dogs, Inc.
- Before you begin the Testing and Observation process, plan to attend a visit without your dog. See what a therapy dog does and check out environments the dogs may encounter. You know your dog better than we do at this point. Be honest about whether or not your dog is suitable and exhibits appropriate behavior and skills.
- Make a copy of your dog’s health record. Bring this copy to your Testing appointment. This copy should show current dates for the following items:
- Rabies (frequency required by law in Brevard County, FL)
- Any other vaccinations that you have done by your vet (varies between everyone)
- Negative fecal test for intestinal parasites (within the last couple of months)
- Select a facility from the calendar other than a children’s visit. Call the Tester/Observer (T/O) listed and make an appointment for the initial Test. Testing and Observation appointments are limited, so schedule your dates with the T/O several days ahead of time. If you cannot make the visit, please call the T/O and cancel so someone else may have the spot. Do not come to a visit to be tested or observed without an appointment. You may waste a trip because the T/O may not be able to accommodate you.
- Be sure your dog is “squeaky-clean” and free of fleas, ticks, etc. Hairy and furry dogs should have been well brushed to minimize shedding. Nails should be trimmed and smooth. Teeth and breath should be clean.
- Before your Test, you will sign a Release stating that you are responsible for any injury or damage done by your dog during the Testing/Observation period.
- Bring proper equipment to all SCTD-sponsored visits.
- LEASH … No longer than 4 feet in length
- COLLAR … Slip or buckle collars made of nylon, leather, or chain
- No pinch, prong, spike, or electric collars; No harness; No adjustable or chain leads
- BREVARD COUNTY LICENSE … Dog must wear current county license tag
- You must always be in control of your dog. You and your dog will be asked to demonstrate basic obedience skills on a loose lead during the initial Test. Your dog should walk nicely on a lead without pulling or dragging you. He should sit on command and be willing to stay when asked. He must be able to keep four feet on the ground, with no jumping on people or other dogs. Dogs must tolerate handling on all parts of the body. They must be housebroken and be able to do a one-hour visit without an accident. Your dog should be socialized around all ages of people and tolerant of unexpected touch, loud sounds, strange objects, and sudden movements. Formal obedience classes are not required but are strongly suggested to prepare for therapy dog activity.
- You must be observed on 3 visits including the initial Test and Observation.
